Bastante is made using one of the world’s finest raw materials “Calfskin.” Extremely soft and smooth this French calf looks and feels beyond belief. Since Calfskin comes from the raising of calf for veal these hides are rare and quite small. The size limitation of Bastante, means that only specific manufacturers have the ability to work with these hides. Bastante hides are full grain and the calfskins are dyed for color using the finest water-based technology available. In keeping with the tight natural grain of the calfskin leather, Bastante hides are vacuum dried to ensure the grain stays tight and firm in order to give the surface a silky and smooth texture. The tight grain of calfskin is very prestigious and many try to simulate it on traditional cowhides. As we all know there is nothing like the original. Next, a layer of specially formulated water-based pigments are applied to give an even surface appearance. The pigments are specifically designed to give this calf skin a smooth appearance without covering the natural grain of the leather or disturbing the softness of the hand. These are the attributes of fine calfskin leather and should not be covered up. Bastante hides will vary in color from dye lot to dye lot. Expect some color variation from swatch to hide. Leather will fade with prolonged exposure to light.
